From the Pastoral Office for Catechesis: Catechetical Day 2013 set for Oct. 5
Annual event open to all in the diocese
By Nan Claire Ross
“Open the Door of Faith” is this year’s theme for the annual diocesan catechetical day, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School, Lafayette.
The theme, determined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, challenges us to learn about our faith and to go out and tell others about it.
We are called to bring others to the light of Christ — to evangelize — by our actions, words and deeds.
The catechetical day is a perfect way for catechists to learn more about our faith; however, the day is open to all in the diocese.
Professor Tom Walters will be the keynote speaker for the day.
He is a professor of religious education at Saint Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, a position he has held since 1983.
A well-known author and speaker, Walters has written several books. His most recent is A Crucial
Key, a study of generational differences among current and future catechetical leaders. His wife, Rita, co-authored the book with him. His areas of expertise include religious education and catechetics.
The Oct. 5 catechetical day also will offer more than 30 breakout sessions, presented by diocesan and parish staff.
Some of the breakout session topics will include: “Tough Topics in the Classroom,” “Saints of the U.S.A.,” “Web Sources,” “Everyday Spirituality,” “Prayer for Elementary Students,” “Life Teen and Edge,” “Promoting Chaste Living,” “Sacramental Gems,” “Social Media,” “Preserving Our Traditions,” “Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth,” “Engaging Christmas and Easter Catholics,” “Fostering Community” and “Men’s Spirituality.”
