Kokomo teen designs winning shirt for NCYC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Teenagers and chaperones from the Lafayette diocese who attended the recent 2009 National Catholic Youth Conference wore eye-catching T-shirts created by a Kokomo student.

Sarah Jones, 16, of St. Joan of Arc Parish, won a diocesan contest for the best design. The 239 attendees from the Local Church wore shirts that showcased her artistic talents.

“I got a $200 scholarship, so I only had to pay $6 to come,” Jones said while attending the biennial event that brought 21,000 people to downtown Kansas City for three days of prayer, song, workshops, nationally known speakers and fun.

“It was so cool to actually see the shirts that were mine,” Jones said.

She played off the theme of “Christ Reigns.” The front of the black shirts included a cartoon cow wearing a raincoat, a crow holding an umbrella, blue raindrops and the words, “I’m soaking wet because …”

Continued on the back were the words “… Christ Reigns! Kansas City, Missouri, NCYC 2009,” then, “Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana.”

The back also included a cross, and “Christ reigns” quote from the Book of Revelation that read:

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

Contest rules called for a cow to be included, because Indiana teens were identified by those farm animals.

Jones said it took her two or three hours to come up with a general design, which she drew free-hand on a computer.

She’ll be too old to attend the 2011 NCYC in Indianapolis. But she and 238 other people always will have “her” shirt to remember the 2009 conference by.

“I’m really excited that my artwork (was) worn by everybody,” Jones said. “I want to get into graphics and design. I have designed shirts before for sports, drama and band, but nothing quite like this.”
