NOBLESVILLE — Modest formal dresses and chaste forms of dance highlighted a pre-prom fashion show held at St. Theodore Guerin High School on Dec. 19.

“Like many schools, we’ve wrestled at dances with appropriate dancing and attire,” said Father Dale Ehrman, vice president of the school. “A student committee has been working on this. We have heard from parents and girls that it is hard to find modest dresses.”

Guerin Catholic will hold its prom from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

The Catholic Life Subcommittee, made up of students, came up with the idea for the Dec. 19 convocation, which included members of the Indy Swing Dance Club demonstrating the East Coast Swing and the West Coast Swing. The group has offered five free swing-dance lessons to all Guerin Catholic students in the months leading up to the prom.

“It’s a fun way to show people how to be modest,” said Miranda Wood, co-chair of the Catholic Life Subcommittee. “Everyone already knows how to dance immodestly, so it’s good to give them alternatives. The main thing is that we want to make sure everyone has fun at dances.”

The students listened to tapes, and arranged for a live orchestra to play “Big Band” sound at the prom.

“I think it’s good we want to change it up,” said Tyler Dolan, subcommittee co-chair. “I think the dancing is a good idea — we’re going back to a live band and music. We don’t have to worry about fitting in too much — we can just go and have fun.”

“The dancing is a good alternative to what we’re used to,” said Colleen Reegan, a junior.

“I think it’s good to let people know where to get dresses for the next dance,” said senior Emily Meister, a model in the show.

Dresses were modeled by Campus Ministry students, and were donated by Bridal Boutique. Flowers for the show were donated by Union Street Flowers.

“I think the students want other choices,” said Deborah Riley, director of campus ministry at Guerin Catholic.

“They had meetings and this was all from the students’ ideas,” Riley said. “They did some research and came up with everything for the show — from the dresses to the music. The music of today lends itself to ‘grinding.’”

“I thought the show was really creative,” freshman Christina Mezanowski said. “The dresses weren’t that bad — but I’m not sure if kids would go out and dance like that.”

“I thought the dancing was cool,” said sophomore Kate Woo, “and the show gave me new ideas for dresses.”
