Catholic Press
Month
First, it coincides with a government agency’s public threat to our religious freedom. Please do not confuse this freedom with the freedom to worship. In terms of scale, religious freedom is to religious worship what a major-league baseball stadium is to a baseball. This is a rather vulgar comparison, but it points to comparative scale of Catholic concerns. We have a lot to learn in a short time. Second, The Catholic Moment and other diocesan newspapers in Indiana are able to publish about this and other topics “in our own voice.” We can communicate unmuted and uncensored. Our paper’s mission is explaining our tradition to our own people, to hold up the person of Christ along with the light and truth that are his. I say this not to fault the commercial media, but it is not their job to see through the eyes of faith, for people whose great hope is in God’s love and eternal life. As someone who reads for hours each day, I admit that there is the temptation to subscribe to one less thing. We all have our favorite publications that summarize things so we get the general drift about things. In matters of faith, and in matters of liberty, we might repeat the old saying, “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” Perhaps today it will help to remember another saying: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” A Catholic press fulfills many functions, and vigilance remains one of them. Please support our diocesan Catholic newspaper with your paid subscriptions. We do more than get close to our faith, we celebrate it. We print more than general Christian news, we also focus on the lived faith within communities that you recognize. We do more than get things “about right” in doctrine and moral teaching. And we represent an authoritative teaching voice that echoes the person of Christ the Teacher. In this last truth, we remember how Jesus’ teachings not only sought integrity in civil authorities, but also in his religious audience. In our current challenges, it is necessary to remember this final fact. Crucial times ask as much about our character as about our objectives. |
