Tax relief needed To the Editor: The story about property tax relief in the March 23 issue of The Catholic Moment certainly brought to mind concerns of Indiana homeowners. The issue seems to be “whom you tax” for government services. In a free country, such as the United States, its citizens are free to own property, including a residence for their family. But in some states, such as Indiana, there are penalties for doing so. Governments are necessary. They provide numerous important services, such as police and fire protection, roads, public schools, etc. Increasing the sales tax won’t help much. Most couples with an average income purchased a home for their families, with a mortgage loan payable for 25 or 30 years during their “working years.” However, in Indiana, they are taxed every year for owning that home for the rest of their lives, beyond their working years. At retirement, when the only source of income is Social Security, this “ownership penalty” is difficult to handle. Why not shift the government support primarily to the income tax? The more you make, the more help you can give to the state. Indiana residents need property tax relief. It’s a moral issue!
